Before buying a ceramic coating, ask what product is being installed, how the paint will be prepared, what the quote includes, how you must care for it, and what the warranty actually covers. A coating can make cleaning easier and improve water behavior; it is not a substitute for rock-chip protection or routine washing.
What preparation is included?
A coating is applied to the finish that exists on the day of installation. If the paint has swirls, water spots, or bonded contamination, ask whether washing, decontamination, and polishing are included or quoted separately. Request an inspection in good light. A new vehicle can still have transport or dealership wash marks; age alone does not answer whether correction is needed.
Which product and which claim?
Ask for the actual product name and its written care instructions. 3M, for example, describes its coating's water-beading performance as lasting up to five years with proper care and maintenance. That is a product-specific upper claim, not a lifespan promise for every coating or every car. Ask the installer what they will document and whether periodic maintenance is required to retain a warranty.
What happens after installation?
- How long must the car stay dry or out of a wash? Use the selected product's instructions, not a generic internet number.
- What wash method and shampoo does the installer recommend?
- Are maintenance inspections required, and are they included in the quote?
- What should you do if water stops beading or contamination bonds to the surface?
The answer should be specific to the coating. A coated car still needs careful washing. Abrasive cleaning can mar the underlying paint or reduce coating performance.
What it will not fix
A coating does not fill a deep scratch, correct orange peel, stop a stone chip, or make a dirty car self-cleaning. If chip resistance is your primary goal, compare ceramic coating and paint protection film. If the current paint looks dull, compare correction and coating before choosing the package.
Request a transparent quote
Give the installer the model, age, parking conditions, and the appearance you want. Ask for separate prices for prep, paint correction, coating, and future upkeep. Our Dallas coating page is the starting point for a tailored request.
