Ceramic coating vs. paint protection film: which one do you need?

They get lumped together constantly, but they solve genuinely different problems.

The core difference

Ceramic coating is a thin, hard liquid polymer layer that bonds to the clear coat. It's built for chemical, UV, and water resistance — not impact resistance. Paint protection film (PPF) is a thick, clear urethane film applied to the vehicle in physical sheets. It's built specifically to absorb impact — rock chips, road debris, minor abrasion — which a coating simply can't do.

Can you use both?

Yes — and it's a common combination. PPF handles impact protection on high-exposure panels (hood, front bumper, mirrors), while ceramic coating goes over the film and the rest of the vehicle for UV resistance and easier washing across the whole car. Ceramic-coated PPF also tends to be easier to keep clean than bare film.

Which one should you get?

  • Choose ceramic coating if your priority is UV protection, easier washing, and gloss retention on a daily driver — especially relevant given how much sun Dallas vehicles see.
  • Choose PPF if your priority is protecting against rock chips and highway debris, particularly on a newer or higher-value vehicle, or one that does a lot of highway driving.
  • Choose both if budget allows and you want comprehensive protection — this is increasingly the standard approach for new luxury and performance vehicles.
