Paint correction on repainted panels: what the inspection should cover
Tell the detailer about repainting, body repairs and protective film before agreeing to paint correction. Different panels may have different finishes and histories. The assessment should identify what is known, what remains uncertain and which areas require a more cautious or limited approach.

Bring the repair history you have
Provide body-shop invoices, repair dates and paint-care instructions if available. Identify panels you know were refinished and label uncertain areas as unknown. Don't assume a clean vehicle-history report establishes that every panel has its original paint.
If the repair is recent, ask the body shop or paint-system provider when polishing and protective products are appropriate. A generic waiting period from another vehicle isn't a substitute for that information.
Ask how the detailer will assess the finish
| Area of review | Question to ask |
|---|---|
| Surface condition | Which marks are in the surface and which may be deeper? |
| Repair boundaries | Where does the known repainting begin and end? |
| Measurements | What can the tools establish, and what can't they? |
| Test area | Will the proposed process be checked before wider work? |
| Limits | Which defects should remain rather than be chased aggressively? |
A measurement shouldn't be described as a complete history of every paint layer. Ask the detailer to explain uncertainty instead of promising a percentage of defect removal before inspection.
Approve a result range, not perfection
Review a test area under suitable lighting where the provider offers one. Discuss the balance between appearance and preserving the finish. Deep marks, sanding issues or failing paint may need a body-shop assessment rather than more polishing.
Ask whether the proposal differs by panel. A single “two-stage correction” label doesn't explain how a repaired panel will be handled or whether it is suitable for the same process.
Keep correction separate from protection
If a coating or wax is proposed afterward, confirm compatibility and the repairer's care restrictions. A protective product doesn't repair unstable paint. Ask what maintenance is required and which existing defects may remain visible.
